Accelerated death benefits for critical, chronic, and terminal illness
North American's accelerated death benefit endorsement (ADBE) allows the policyowner to access a portion of the death benefit if the insured is diagnosed with a qualifying critical, chronic or terminal illness. These powerful benefits could provide funds at a time when your client's family might need it most. North American automatically includes the accelerated death benefit feature at policy issue for no additional premium on applicable policies.3
Premium Deposit Agreement
The Premium Deposit Agreement can provide a simple solution to fund a life insurance policy with a lump sum and not create a Modified Endowment Contract.4
*Not available in some states and territories.
1. Guaranteed death benefits are subject to premium payment requirements.
2. Conversions are allowed according to the following schedule:
- 10-year term length: the earlier of 7 years or age 70
- 15-year term length: the earlier of 12 years or age 70
- 20-year term length: the earlier of 15 years or age 70
- 30-year term length: the earlier of 20 years or age 70
- The conversion period is never less than 5 years regardless of issue age.
3. For California applicants, there are additional underwriting requirements for the chronic and critical illness benefits.
Accelerated death benefits are subject to eligibility requirements. The death benefit will be reduced by the amount of the death benefit accelerated. Since benefits are paid prior to death, a discount will be applied to the death benefit accelerated. As a result, the actual amount received will be less than the amount of the death benefit accelerated. An administrative fee is required at time of election. Please refer to the appropriate accelerated death benefit marketing guide for additional details including information.
4. For most policies, withdrawals are free from federal income tax to the extent of the investment in the contract, and policy loans are also tax-free so long as the policy does not terminate before the death of the insured. However, if the policy is a Modified Endowment Contract (MEC), a withdrawal or policy loan may be taxable upon receipt. Further, unpaid loan interest on a MEC may be taxable. A MEC is a contract received in exchange for a MEC or for which premiums paid during a seven-year testing period exceed prescribed premium limits (7-pay premiums).
CALIFORNIA AGENTS: Agents offering, marketing, or selling accelerated death benefits for chronic illness in California must be able to describe the differences between benefits provided under an accelerated death benefit for chronic illness and benefits provided under long-term care insurance to clients. You must provide clients with the ADBE Consumer Brochure for California that includes the comparison. Comparison is for solicitation purpose only, not for conversions.
